As-salaamu Alaikum Welcome to

What is the Truth regarding Salafiyyah?.

Answer: as-Salafiyyah is following the Salaf. That is because a person is either a Salafi or he is a Khalafi. Salafee is an ascription to the Salaf with the meaning that one ascribes to them. Ascribing oneself to them is not by way of lineage or by one's blood line or by sex or race or even color. On the contrary it is an ascription to what they were upon concerning the religion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Whenever he mentioned the splitting of the Ummah he explained that there would be a successful group from amongst them which is the Jamaa'ah. Then he explained that it was obligatory for the Ummah to be upon the likes of what the Prophet and the Companions were upon.

The companions are our Salaf concerning the religion. They are the ones who understood the religion. They were the ones who bore witness to the revelation and they understood it. They understood its commentary and its application therefore they are our predecessors. Whoever follows them in regards to their religion from the aspects of creed, acts of worship, the permissible and the forbidden, and business transactions then he is a true Salafi. This means that he practices his religion, his devotion to it, his path to it, his belief in it, and its methodology as the Prophet (may the peace & blessings of Allah be upon) used to.

So as-Salafiyyah is following the example of the companions, to emulate them and to imitate them. Whatever the companions did one does. Whatever the companions left he leaves. Whatever the companions believed in he believes in it. Whatever they did not believe in and renounced he renounces, etc. If one is like this then he is a Salafi.

As for the one who opposes the companions then he is like the one Allah the Mighty & Majestic said about: {So they opposed those after them in opposition and wasted their prayer…}. Those who opposed are the Khalaf who were the ones that opposed their predecessors. They opposed them based on what they were upon concerning the religion and its methodology. So whoever opposes the companions then he is a Khalfi or a Khalafee. The one who acts in accordance with the companions is a Salafi irrespective of the time he lives, the place he is from, or his nationality.

I ask Allah to establish us and you and that he gather us and you under the party of the Noble Salaf who are the companions may Allah be pleased with them and they with Him.

Are the Salafis from Ahlus Sunnah? In the verdict of the Permanent Committee, No. 1361 (1/165) there occurs, "Salafiyyah is an ascription to the Salaf, and the Salaf are the Companions of Allaah?s Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) and the Imaams of Guidance from the the first three generations (may Allaah be pleased with them), those whose goodness has been testified for by Allaah?s Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam), "The best of people are my generation, then those who follow after them, then those who follow after them, then there will come a people whose testimony will precede their oath and their oath will precede their testimony." Reported by Imaam Ahmad in his Musnad and also by al-Bukhaari and Muslim. And "the Salafis" (Salafiyyoon) is the plural of "Salafi", which is an ascription to the Salaf, and its meaning has already preceded. And they are the ones who traverse upon the minhaaj of the Salaf, from amongst the followers of the Book and the Sunnah, those who call to them both, and to acting upon them, as a result of which they are from Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa ah." Is one who calls himself a "Salafi" to be considered a partisan (hizbi?),

There is not harm [1] in labelling oneself with Salafiyyah when it is in truth. However, if it is merely a claim then it is not permissible to label oneself with Salafiyyah, whilst one is upon a manhaj other than that of the Salaf.

The Ash'aris for example, say "We are Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah" and this is not correct. This is because what they are upon is not the manhaj of Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah. It is likewise for the Mu'tazilah who call themselves "Muwahhideen" (Monotheists).

All of them claim to have love for Laylaa
Yet Laylaa does not affirm this for any of them
Hence, the one who claims that he is upon the madhhab of Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah [actually] follows the path of Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah and abandons the Opposers. However if he [is one who] wants to unite the lizard and the fisth - as they say - meaning, to unite a creature from the land with a creature from the sea, then this is not possible. Or to unite water and fire in a vessel. In light of this, Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah do not reconcile with the path (madhhab) of those who oppose them such as the Khawarij, the Mu'tazilah, the Hizbiyyeen amongst those who call themselves, the Contemporary Muslims. Such is one who wants to unite between the errors and misguidance of the contemporaries with the manhaj of the Salaf. So "the latter part of this Ummah will not be corrected except by that which corrected its earliest part." Sayings of the pious Salaf....

'Umar b. Al-Khattâb – Allâh be pleased with him – said:

Verily, the followers of opinion are the enemies of the Sunan (the teachings of Allâh's Messenger as passed down in hadith): they were unable to preserve them and their meanings escaped them, and when asked [questions] they were too embarrassed to say 'We don't know,' so they opposed the Sunan with their opinions.

Ibn Abî Zamanîn, Usûl Al-Sunnah article 8; Al-Lâlakâ`î, Sharh Usûl I'tiqâd Ahl Al-Sunnah article 201 et al.

It is reported that Abû Hâzim Al-Ashja'î – Allâh have mercy on him – said:

If you find yourself in a time when speech is accepted as knowledge and knowledge is accepted as deeds [instead of putting it into practice], then you are in the worst time and with the worst people.

Abû Bakr Al-Daynûrî, Al-Mujâlasah wa Jawâhir Al-'Ilm` 4:338.

Abû Hâzim Salmân Al-Ashja'î (died circa 100H) was one of the eminent Tâbi'în. He was a fully reliable transmitter of hadîth and a companion of Abû Hurayrah – Allâh be pleased with him.
